Product Placement in Music Videos free essay sample
In todayââ¬â¢s society, we are bombarded by advertisements everyday of our lives. On average, Americans are potentially exposed to about 600-625 commercial messages in a single day, according to the American Association of Advertising Agencies. These can be in any form, from television or radio commercials, to outdoor billboards, to even the clothes that we wear. Typically, when watching any kind of broadcast media program, we know when the commercial breaks are on and are aware that we are viewing an attempt at getting us to buy something or go somewhere. This, however, is not always the case when advertisers seek to get our attention. A large category for advertising is known as Product placement, where advertisers pay to have products featured during programming or in movies, in addition to the adââ¬â¢s we see every day. Today, these methods have managed to cross into the Music Video platform, using artists to promote certain brands or companies inside their own promotional visuals. We will write a custom essay sample on Product Placement in Music Videos or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When MTV first broadcast in 1981, they were known for music, not just music videos. The station was the new ââ¬Å"itâ⬠venue for the latest on music and news and opened new artistic doors for a generation. The station even had a ban on blatant marketing plugs in music videos and would blur or edit it out of the video completely. Nowadays, not only is MTV now known for such television gems as ââ¬Å"The Jersey Shoreâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Real Worldâ⬠, they also donââ¬â¢t play many music videos. However, when they do, you realize the ban on products in music videos has been given some heavy leeway. You canââ¬â¢t watch many of the latest popular music videos without suddenly realizing that Kodak Cameras are the beeââ¬â¢s knees, or that you want to go out to the bar tonight to try some ââ¬Å"Revolucion Tequilaâ⬠. Marshall McLuhan said in his book, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, ââ¬Å"Ideally, advertising aims at the goal of a programmed harmony among all human impulses and aspirations and endeavors. Using handicraft methods, t stretches out toward the ultimate electronic goal of a collective consciousness. When all production and all consumption are brought into a pre-established harmony with all desire and all effort, then advertising will have liquidated itself by its own successâ⬠. I feel like product placement falls into what he was talking about and has become one of the more successful ways of advertising a product or service, sometimes even over traditional television spot advertising. In music videos, itââ¬â¢s something that people watch over and over again. It was reported that 57% of young adults in the UK watch music videos on YouTube. When people watch music videos on the internet, they tend to watch them again. Unlike with traditional advertising, product placement in music videos opens the door for the product to be seen repeatedly and in a closer time frame. Unlike advertisements on television that, now with the DVR age, can be fast forwarded and skipped entirely, the target is seeing the product while seeing the music video, which he or she is not so inclined to skip through. Marshall McLuhanââ¬â¢s theory that says ââ¬Å"the medium is the messageâ⬠, meaning people will get the message effectively or not based on what medium is used as a delivery system. This is where his theory of hot and cool media comes into effect. When delivering a subliminal message, which is what product placement does, you have to have a medium that involves higher sensory participation. For example if a song is playing on the radio, you cannot see that the singer is holding a bottle of Fiji Water. They would have to say during the commercial break that they are sponsored by Fiji. That is unless, of course, youââ¬â¢re like Pitbul and throw some Kodak references in your lyrics. To effectively infiltrate your product into your media, there have to be visuals, which is why product placement is effective. The consumer knows theyââ¬â¢re being marketed to, but it still creates a level of intrigue between the consumer and the product. Product placement in music videos was boosted by The Kluger Agency, an Advertising Agency that boasts a non-traditional approach to advertising. Their focus is on strategic partnerships and product placement throughout the music industry. They represent both the artists and the products so that brands can work personally with the musicians, as well as a creative team to come up with the best possible solution for advertising campaigns. The Agency has named this approach ââ¬Å"Brand droppingâ⬠, most times incorporating brands into the song lyrics as well as their accompanying videos. For example, in the music video for ââ¬Å"The Time (Dirty Bit)â⬠by The Black Eyed Peas, ââ¬Å"brand droppingâ⬠fails when BEP member apl. e. ap raps the line ââ¬Å"its gotta be the Apple, Iââ¬â¢m the Mac daddy, yââ¬â¢allâ⬠while showing a Blackberry Tablet (a product that actually does not exist yet, although there were plans to release such a product). While not always effective, in an industry whose profits are being diminished by music pirating, these kinds of product placement solutions for artists create funds for album and music video production. In addition to large corporations integrating their products into music videos, the artists themselves often take time to push their own endeavors. Britney Spears often drops the name of her perfume ââ¬Å"Radianceâ⬠in her music videos, specifically in the videos for ââ¬Å"Hold It Against Meâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Criminalâ⬠. Avril Lavigne is also seen running through the ââ¬Å"Abbey Dawnâ⬠section of a clothing store and putting the clothes on, with Abbey Dawn incorporated into the clothingââ¬â¢s designs. Even Lady Gaga can be seen sporting her own designed pair of Heartbeats By Lady Gaga headphones, a project she embarked on in partnership with the Beats by Dre brand. In addition to putting products in the music videos themselves, advertisers take advantage of the medium used for broadcast. Forty-eight percent of American consumers, according to Nielsen, view online video and advertisers are ready to take advantage of that. With music videos receiving little to no airtime outside of the late night time slots, people have turned to the internet to view their favorite artistââ¬â¢s creations and it shows, with eight out of ten of the Top Viral Videos being music videos. Advertisements prevail on websites such as YouTube, where there is an ad before your video starts, a banner that is shown during the video, a smaller banner above the video, and, most times, links to other videos, which also contain more advertisements. The first video I watched was Lady Gagaââ¬â¢s music video for the song ââ¬Å"Telephoneâ⬠on YouTube. It started with an ad for Mary J. Blidge in American Express Presents: Unstaged, an online series made as part of a partnership with YouTube and Vevo. I noticed there was also a small banner ad to the right of the video above the four promoted Music Videos for the same series that was advertised before the video. The music video itself had tons of examples to pull from in regards to Product Placement. To begin with, the first product to make an appearance was Lady Gaga herself with her song ââ¬Å"Paper Gangsterâ⬠playing in the exercise yard. This was followed by a close up of an inmate wearing Lady Gaga Heartbeatââ¬â¢s headphones, playing another one of her songs ââ¬Å"I Like It Roughâ⬠. From there it went on a tirade of scenes that seemed to be designed to promote ads, such as a close up of her stealing a Virgin Mobile telephone (shown in two separate scenes), wearing coke cans in her hair and coach sunglasses, browsing the dating site Plentyoffish. om on an HP Beats by Dre computer, eating a Honey Bun, using a Polaroid camera (also shown in two different scenes), Miracle Whip (again, 2 different scenes! ), and Wonder Bread. The only two products that did not have any financial contribution were Coke and Wonder Bread, both being additions made by Gaga. Purposely, there was a tie-in between Lady Gaga and all the products that were paid to be put into her video. The laptop used in the video, the HP Envy 15 Beats Edition, comes with headphones and software by rapper Dr. Dre.Monster, the company that makes Dr. Dreââ¬â¢s Beats headphones, makes Lady Gagaââ¬â¢s Heartbeats headphones as well. Also, soon before the release of the video, Lady Gaga was named the Creative Director for a specialty line of Polaroid products. Even the dating website shown in her video had done a promotional contest to win a date with Lady Gaga and tickets to her concert, not to mention Plenty Of Fishs partnership with Interscope Records, Lady Gagaââ¬â¢s record label. Lastly, Gagaââ¬â¢s worldwide Monster Ball Tour was sponsored by Virgin Mobile. This video was an excellent example of ââ¬Å"Brand Droppingâ⬠, due to all the products featured in her video were directly related to her and a product that she was trying to sell, alongside the hosting companies. That is to say, except for Miracle Whip, which has no ties to Lady Gaga, and, in my opinion, opted to be in Gagaââ¬â¢s video to support the new edgier Branding strategy theyââ¬â¢ve been putting out lately with their commercials. The second video I watched was Britney Spearsââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Hold It Against Meâ⬠video. Again, before the video started, I was shown an advertisement for the Xbox Kinect Game ââ¬Å"Dance Central 2â⬠. Just as with the previous video, there was a banner ad on the right of the video for the same game. In the video, Spears rather shamelessly and spokes womanly, holds up a bottle of her own ââ¬Å"Radianceâ⬠Perfume, applies eye shadow from Makeup Forever, and rises mystically surrounded by 360 degrees of Sony television screens playing her music video repertoire. She also, seemingly out of place with the rest of the video, is seen surfing the website Plentyoffish. com (yes, Britney Spears is also an Interscope artist) on a touch screen Sony Computer. I actually could not count the amount of times the word Sony showed up in the four and a half minute video, between actual use and just flashes of the word Sony, which I thought was unusual seeing as Sonyââ¬â¢s Record company is the second largest of the ââ¬Å"Big Fourâ⬠record companies, behind Universal Music Group, which owns Interscope Records. It has been noted that Spears earned Five hundred thousand dollars in revenue from the Product placement in the video, two hundred thousand coming from Plenty Of Fish alone. For my third and final example, I chose to use an artist that doesnââ¬â¢t have the same level of video views as the big LG and Britney. While Telephone and Hold It Against Me boast 128,498,663 and 70,284,020 views, respectively, Minogueââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"All The Loversâ⬠only claims 11,635,129 views and has been available for the same amount of time as Telephone, and came out months before Hold It Against Me. The difference in advertising was evident right away. Unlike the previous two videos, ââ¬Å"All The Loversâ⬠was not preceded by a commercial. Instead, at the 10 second mark in the video, a banner came up from the bottom of the video promoting a singer named Kari Jobe and her new single ââ¬Å"We Areâ⬠. I did not know who Kari Jobe was before seeing it and out of curiosity, stopped to find out about her. As it turned out, she is a Christian Singer signed to EMI Music, the parent label of Parlophone, which Kylie Minogue is signed to. As far as product placement in the video, there is only one product featured and it is not heavily used in the ââ¬Å"storyâ⬠of the video, and that is BMW. Used more in a visual aesthetic kind of way, the car is only seen releasing white balloons and is parked all along the sides of the road seen in the video. While not the perfect camouflage, the product is incorporated well into the video and blends well with the visual theme of the video. While no one denies Minogueââ¬â¢s success as an artist, she has always been one of moderate success in the United States, and therefore isnââ¬â¢t used the same way as ââ¬Å"Mega Starsâ⬠like Lady Gaga and Beyonce, where their star power gives them the leeway to do the things they do as far as advertising. In conclusion, as we look back on the last decade, Product placement in music videos has definitely come a long way, to being prevalent in many of the videos we see. McLuhan had relevant theories in regard to advertising, even back in a time where we did not have the same technology that we have now that revolutionized how we distribute information and reach mass peoples. Those theories have proven well, even in the category of product placement. Thanks to McLuhan, we can analyze every aspect of a media delivery system and find the best and most efficient way to utilize its strengths and make people aware of products and services in a more streamlined and efficient way. While the thought of being solicited while watching artists we enjoy for their music or showmanship feels like it should be unsettling, the business is growing bigger than ever with brands shelling out 6 figures for about 10 seconds of actual screen time, and the videos are doing better than ever.

Brothels and Convents During the Renaissance essays
Brothels and Convents During the Renaissance essays In this essay, I will focus mostly on the regulation of both convents and brothels in the time of Shakespeare and the Renaissance. Ruth Mazo Karras, The Regulation of Brothels in Later Medieval England, focuses exactly on this topic throughout England and other European countries during the Renaissance. In regards to the convents I will be looking closely at an article entitled Subjects on the World's Stage: Essays on British Literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, written by David G. Allen and Robert A. White. The regulations of brothels during the Renaissance were regarded heavily. Karras says that women within these brothels were basically regarded as evil and as sinners yet they remained occupying the position of prostitution solely because of the sexual appetites of men; these brothels were considered a necessary evil(Karras). The first parallel between women of convents and stews is the aspect of being forbidden from being a part of every day society. Women who lived in convents were completely shut off from the public - no insiders could leave and no outsiders could come in (Allen). The only difference in the secrecy of these two places was the fact that brothels were visited by men. Karras also states that the women of brothels were not given the rights of "regular" women. In some places, she was not allowed to reject any customer, indeed could not be raped because she was considered to belong to all men and thus had no right to withhold consent (Karras). These two aspects of womens lives in this time period play a major part in the drama "Measure for Measure", and especially set up the scene in the opening act of the play. When Claudio sends for his sister, Isabel, to help him get out of jail, in which he was sentenced to death for having premarital (by the eyes of the church) sex with Juliet, Isabel leaves the convent in which she was about to t...

Short Case Study - Essay Example The ceiling also had wet patches which is a sign of poor maintenance. The ceiling condition was questionable since it has been intact for several years since its installation. Possible causes of the incident can be generalized to give countless reasons. They may include; poor quality of ceiling material, poor maintenance, poor roofing and ceiling installation and the negligence of the symptoms and risks caused by the ceiling conditions. Since root analysis is a team work option, the senior members of the organization would not have known until the leaking incident in the boardroom. The staffs at large carry the responsibility of good working conditions on their shoulder. To avoid future incidences, the replacement of the ceiling is highly recommended. To keep the risk at bay, replacement of all old ceiling in the organization should also be done. Inclusion of Children in South Korea Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
Inclusion of Children in South Korea - Essay Example Special education is focused on providing education to children or individuals with special needs. In the past, Koreans used to have a negative opinion towards people with disabilities. (Americans with Disabilities Act, Ohio State University) They used to think that having a family member who has disabilities is something to be ashamed of. (Kim and Kang) For them, disability was a problem that was for the individual to overcome for himself, all by himself. Over the years, with a number of developments in Korea's legislation that have provisions for the rights of the disabled, this negative concept has made a 180-degree turn. With this very positive development, and their keen interest in how to improve their education system, Koreans are very much intent to leave no stones unturned. For children who have minor disabilities, the Korean education system has embraced inclusive education. Inclusive education is defined as system of education or a school system wherein all children, regardless of their abilities or disabilities are all considered active components of the school community. Inclusive education aims to provide an academic environment where all students are given equal opportunities and therefore leaves little or no room for discrimination. (Kim) Students who have minor disabilities are recommended to attend regular schools. ... (Kim) B. Vulnerable Children defined A vulnerable child, in general, is defined as a child 18 years old and below who lost their parents or guardians. This could be a permanent situation, as there are those who lost both parents through death, and some were temporarily displaced because of certain unfortunate events and are in need of care. (Smart, 2003) In general, this includes orphans, street children, children who have certain medical conditions, children with certain disabilities and others. (Unicef, n.d.) C. Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model Urie Bronfenbrenner is considered as one of the world's leaders in the study of developmental psychology (Wikipedia, 2006). One of his most significant contributions is the development of the Ecological Systems Theory. Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory discusses the major factors that affect a child's development. According to his concept, relationships and environment play a major role in a child's development. As child matures, the more knowledge, culture and values he acquires from his education, cultural heritage, parents and peers. His interactions in his affinities and his environment form in him a set of what he considers "norms'. A child's needs vary as he goes through the cycle of life. These transitions that he will encounter will slowly reveal how his influences affect the development of his personality as he deals with them head on. Bronfenbrenner has identified four levels of systems that make up the Ecological Systems. These are the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem and chronosystem. These so-called systems are actually environments and situations that have a great influence in a person's development. (The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of

A Short Story By Oââ¬â¢ Henry Essay Example for Free
A Short Story By Oââ¬â¢ Henry Essay Themes: Death and Dying: Last leaf is a short story that entails the treasury of life and the existence of faith and hope. It need to the importance of living and how we deal with the hindrances we battle through our life story. It is a moving story across the traps that come across us in the most significant parts of our lives, the value of life is the centerpiece of story, where all the things go back and revolveâ⬠¦Apart of this story gives us a hint that God is the only one who knows that whether we ride on with life and chances or trail on and be drawn against the judgment, the melodramatic and picturesque setting of the story connects to the negative status of main character facing life and death subject matter. Pessimism: Johnsy the main character seems to be a very pessimistic person. She has lost the entire positive attitude in life due to her disease and she is waiting for her death. ââ¬Å"Your little lady has made up her mind that sheââ¬â¢s not going to get well. Has she anything on her mindâ⬠That is the first step of Jhonsy that she has made up her mind that she will die when the last leaf fall. That signifies the mental and psychological conditionn of her and is describing the theme of pessimistic. ââ¬Å"She was looking out of window and counting -counting backwardsâ⬠The psychological disturbances shown by Oââ¬â¢ Henry in these lines as she is tired of waiting that when the last leaf falls, she will be near to death. ââ¬Å"When the last one falls I must go, too.â⬠Here in these lines Henry has showed extreme pessimism. It is the last one, said Johnsy ââ¬Å"I thought it would surely fall during the night. I heard the wind. It will fall today, and I shall die at the same time.â⬠These words literated by jonsy again show her desperate and chaotic state of mind. She has supposed the things which have no logic and waiting for her death, or waiting for the last leaf to fall. Self-Sacrifice: Mr. Behrman risks his life for Johnsy. He has sacrificed his own life, to give life to Johnsy the painting he made at the wall, shows his self sacrificing, kind and noble nature. He himself catches the pneumonia andà dies, but he didnââ¬â¢t let Johnsy to die. With the character of Mr. Buhrmann, Oââ¬â¢ Henry is showing the sacrificing mature of a man and it gives us a message that self sacrificing is a great deed and one has to kind and gentle towards others. ââ¬Å"Mr. Buhrmann died of pneumonia today in hospital.â⬠Hope: Theme of hope is very nicely presented in this story. Doctor is a very optimistic person and he tries to make Johnsy realized that is she has made her mind that she will die when the last leaf fall that could be harmful for her. He told her that he can only provide her medicine and that is effective as 50 cent, the next situation is in her hand. ââ¬Å"I subtract 50 percent from the curative power of medicines.â⬠If you will get her to ask one question about the new writer styles in cloak sleeves I will promise you one-in-five chance for her, instead ofâ⬠So Oââ¬â¢ Henry conveys message one never let go for hope and optimist approach in life. It is out state of mind which can bring worse or better for us in our lives ââ¬Å"Sadie, someday I hope to point the bay of Naplesâ⬠These lines show Johnsyââ¬â¢s desires and aspirations. It gives the picture of hope and this hope in life gives us the spirit of living in this world. Love and Friendship: In last leaf Oââ¬â¢ Henry describes friendship and bondage between two friends. They care and love each other, and she supports Johnsy morally when she falls ill. She proves to be great support for Johnsy and she tries her level best to bring back Johnsy towards life and in the world of optimism. ââ¬Å"Dear, Dear!â⬠said she, learning her won face down to the pillow â⬠think of me, if you wonââ¬â¢t think of yourself. What would I do?â⬠These lines show the effective relationship between two friends. Mr. Behrman also shows great deal of love for these girls. Although he is bit careless person but he really cared for Johnsy and his love is shown by his painting for the sake of Johnsyââ¬â¢s life. What is the theme of The Last Leaf by O Henry? The theme of this story is definitely self-sacrifice. Mr. Behrman sacraficed his own health for Johnsy. One theme of this story is that you should never judge someone by what they appear to be, but by their actions. Behrman acts fierce and aggressive, but his actions show how much he cares about Johnsy. I learned to judge people, not by their looks, but by their actions, because ultimately, actions are the things that make an impact Passion, hope and personal sacrifice. O Henry gives people hope in a quickly transforming world where big bussinesses and technology were taking over artsy New York. it is about the love between those friends

Acid Rain :: Free Essay Writer
The Effects of Acid Rain on Lakes and Trees Acid rain has long been argued by societyââ¬â¢s most formidable minds. It indirectly destroys ecosystems that surround forests and lakes (Taylor, 26). People need to make decisions dealing with the destruction of nature and the role acid rain plays in it. Acid rain destroys millions of forests and lakes (Taylor, 26 ). Studies show that acid rain is one of the largest contributing factors in the death of forests and lakes. Acid rain indirectly kills millions of acres of forestland each decade. In the 1960s, people found that acid rain fall was unhealthy and damaging to forests (Baines, 20). Acid rain does not kill the trees directly. Acid rain makes the tree weaken and poisons it with toxic substances that are slowly released from the soil (EPA). When the trees weaken from the acid, it has a harder time fighting off adversaries such as fungi, diseases, and frost so subsequently it dies. Around the 1970s the acid rain dilemma got worse, the acid rain has put trees in danger and now they are starting to die off. The effects of acid rain on a tree is shown if it has less foliage, yellow spots and produces many cones (Baines, 22). Secondly, acid rain damages the trees through the soil by releasing metals that harm them even further (Lucas, 72). Acid rain makes the trees lose their leaves, so when the trees try to regrow their leaves, buds come instead, this process is called a panic shoot (M. 15). Large land areas which used to be covered with forests are now gone, dead or dying (Baines, 21). Scientists have studied the effects on acid rain in lakes for several decades (Lucas, 49). Scientist use their observations to determine whether lakes are acidous or not. People can tell if there is acid rain in a lake if the water is clean and crystal clear, but with hardly no life in it (Baines, 16).The acid rain can enter the lakes by way of snow, rain,

Advance Color Photography
A photograph is a frozen second in time, a token of a memory. If one would really look at any picture, however, a photograph is more complicated than that. Without formal education regarding photography, one cannot fully tell what a good photograph is by simply looking at it. Most of the time even, people say that it is a nice picture if their faces were not construed and their bad angles well kept.People don't often find the difference between black and white pictures and full color pictures. It could be that, in this day and age, color can be considered as a basic necessity, something that can sooth the senses. Likewise, color photography is a technology that allows us to maximize how we keep our memories, which is how we remember it: in full color. In this photography class, we have learned that wasting film is not exactly as it is. With every click of the shutter, we practice. At first, it was quite challenging how one can use an SLR, a camera an average person assume professional photographers use.Although there is much truth in their assumptions, not all the best photographs are taken using such a camera. A simple point and shoot camera can create the best photographs if the handler knows what he is doing.A photographer should know the three basic principles in taking high quality photographs: composition, depth of field, and exposure. Although a point and shoot camera cannot maximize the latter two principles, the composition of an image is the most important element in photography. This is due to the fact that the shutter speed and exposure levels are the elements that gives better effects to pictures.Furthermore, to become a skilled photographer, one should be aware of the other equipment used. A tripod is a fundamental component in taking good pictures. In settings with poor lighting, it is necessary to use a tripod if the camera does not a have a flash, or if it is a kind of night photography. The tripod assists the artist to take clear pictures. A sh aky hand hinders one from capturing a crisp photograph.Different lenses further allows photographers to be more specific in taking pictures. If their object relates to sports, we will need extra lenses that can zoom into moving objects, while maintaining that crisp look. These different kinds of lenses can be necessary for the different specializations different photographers have: portraits, landscapes, architecture, night, still life, journalism, and sports, to name a few.Although I did not learn everything I could have in one course, I have browsed photographs and some basic techniques online. Access is quite easy, and I believe I have the right the maximize this.By taking into my formal studies the extra curricular information I attained, I am able to explore and execute different styles. Other means of sharpening my eye in finding a good photograph was through looking at magazines, newspapers, ads, and even those brochures I can come across.I was browsing in the internet for so me of the best photographs in the recent history when I came across an address that showed the best picks in the year 2005. C.L. Garvin of The Register Herald was one of the artists included in their list.Among all those listed, her photograph was the most serene looking. Her photograph consists of a reflection of a willow, with fall floating on the surface of the water, with the sky as the overall background. The different techniques she incorporated in this photo are also applied by the other photographers in that category. The difference was how they were incorporated. The composition and total appeal of the photograph also brought about its success. In class, we also learned the difference between snapshots and photographs. Snapshots are those pictures we take during parties, special events and documentations hastily. They are usually taken with a simple automatic point and shoot camera without considering the other elements that will make it art.Photographs are taken with a caref ul eye. It doesn't matter if the photo was taken quickly, as long as the photographer keeps in mind the basic elements as he angles his camera to the scene, then it can become art.In color photography, we highly give importance to the role of color to the totality of the image. The different colors used in the composition of the photograph generally sets the mood or tone of the photograph, much like how anything is visually affected by the use of color. In photographs, shades of blue are cool colors, which represent serenity.Warm colors such as yellow and red represent energy, and earth tones are relaxing. The mixture of colors may represented something greater. This means that in taking photographs, the composition of the shot includes balance between the elements and color use.Given that color use in taking pictures can break or make the photograph, the choice of colors to use in the frame is quite vital. The purpose of taking a photograph is not just to freeze time, but also to h ave it represent something more than that, like emotions and thoughts. It is not simply taking a portion of our memories, but also giving it a justifiable aesthetic value. The basic idea is to capture, along with everything within that moment framed. A photographer should also keep in mind the harmony of colors, and how each complement the focal image of the frame. Some experienced photographers will say that those who wish to become an accomplished photographer should simply take a camera, look through the viewer, find an object and press the shutter. That is putting it too mildly. True, some of the best photographs have been taken in an instant. This does not show luck at all, but quick thinking. Moreover, any photographer will not take just one frame of one composition. It can take three frames to 3 rolls to achieve the desired composition and effect of the picture. What is important is that the artist can think fast and be observant enough to find his point of attack. There are basi c guidelines to follow in creating a good photograph. It was mentioned earlier that there are equipment involved. Composition has been long established as a basic principle. However, there are other ways to point the difference between a good and a bad shot. According to another website I came across, the other points one should consider in taking and deliberating the quality of photographs include: irrelevant elements, rule of thirds, lines, frames, camera shots and camera angles.Irrelevant elements include those objects that are not involved in the composition but happened to be captured within the frame. This is unfortunately something we cannot always make do without, especially in a very busy scenario. For example, one picture is focusing on children playing in the park.Parents often see this as a perfect time to have their cameras with them. They bring out the camera and start taking their pictures. Luckily in this age of user friendly digital cameras, one can immediately revie w the shot they took. However, in the time of film, we sometimes find ourselves frustrated when the best picture becomes a disaster as somebody's elbow get in the way, the shot was blurry, or if they weren't even in the frame. It happens, and is often depressing, to find that we don't really know how to take good pictures. The rule of thirds basically imagining dividing the frame into nine boxes, two lines horizontal, and two lines vertical. The idea is to always have this imaginary grid in place every time a picture is being taken. This grid tells us that we should never put the main focus dead center.By putting the focus along these lines, we create a more balanced photograph. The illusion adds depth to the entire image of the photograph. The focus of the photograph would seem out of place if it is at the center of the frame. It will look odd and unattractive.Lines in photographs are elements that adds drama and excitement. It has been said that this technique is quite challenging t o master due to the complexity it adds to the total appeal of the photograph. There are two kinds of lines used in photographs: explicit and implicit. Explicit lines are those close up details of objects, which if taken from a certain angle can be very beautiful. On the other hand, implicit lines are those that are implied in the photo. These lines are also considered as invisible lines because one cannot really see it. These lines have been incorporated from the moment the frame was being composed by the photographer. Furthermore, these lines are not always considered when the photographer takes a picture. Subconsciously, these lines become a guide on how the audience will look at the image.Framing involves what we call the headroom. This element pertains to the space between the edge of the frame and the focus. Also related to the rule of thirds, if the focus of the photograph is not situated in a way that it fills the frame completely. If not, the object should be strategically pl aced that if it doesn't fill the frame, other objects will make up for it. The idea is always to have balance and aesthetic value.Camera Shots will refer to distance of the camera to the object. There are different camera shots a photographer can explore: extreme long shot, long shot, medium shot, close up shot, and extreme close up shot. These shot usually involve a person as reference. Extreme long shot will look like the picture was taken from afar, and the person is only a small percent of the frame.Long shot refers to fitting the person from head to toe within the frame. A medium shot will refer to half the anatomy. The close up shot will refer to the area from the chest up, with sufficient headroom. Lastly, the extreme close up shot would be a very tight frame of a person's face. One should always remember, however, that the frames should never divide the body of a person in a frame at the joints: knees, waist, elbow, and neck. The last of the basic principles discussed by the website I found and was much used as well in class is the camera angle. Five different angles was discussed. The first refers to how the viewer seems to be interacting with the object, this is called a subjective angle. An objective angle on the other hand, refers to how the object is involved his own environment. The other three angles will refer to the point of view of the camera. The first of these is the low angle, where the camera is taking a picture from the lower areas of the object. This gives the object a sense of power and strength. The second angle would be the high angle wherein the camera takes a picture from above the object, giving it the opposite appeal: submission and weakness. The last angle discussed is the oblique angle. Quite an interesting point of view, an artist can explore a lot of different angles that can be both dramatic and playful. However, once a picture is taken, it isn't a quality photograph yet. How pictures areà printed are also taken into consider ation. In this digital era, we can print color photographs in our very homes. Technology really made it easier for us.From our cameras, we upload our photos in computers for retouching and cropping. For black and white photographs, there are specific chemicals used to develop the film, and from that film onto paper. Darkrooms and enlargers are used. However, for colored photographs, conventional printers and photo papers can be used. To have a more than satisfactory output of these pictures, the kinds of printers and papers should be of top quality to have the desired outcome. Today, the different colors used to print are abbreviated as CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). These colors are mixed to form the different colors of the spectrum, producing colorful photographs. The choices made by the photographer regarding these factors in printing highly affect the output of the picture. It is only logical that way. If pictures are printed on low quality papers, through a rather cheap machine, then what else can we expect at the paper tray? If we are really after the best quality, then we should go all the way. Making use of substitutes will not promote everything we desire.Realism in photography is quite a rampant style today. Traced to where photographs are still in forms of paintings, realism is a style which portrays real life: problems, physical appearances, and sometimes morals, as listed by the website aHUNTFOR.Apparently, this style is also used in advocacies and statement artworks tody. The general context involved in realism boils down to the emotions: the feelings during hardship and likewise happiness. It paints reality of that time. When realism first came out as a style of art, all the neglected aspects of their lives were given light. Anyone today can produce quality photographs due to the convenience technology offered. All the other emotions and overlooked issues were given light. This explains the passion people express through advocacy photograp hs. Since they are given the liberty to express themselves, so share what they see through their lenses. This course taught me so much. What I have written here only involves the technical aspects of photography. These are the basic knowledge I need in constructing my own little masterpieces in full color. Printing them out through conventional printers or those in the high end series can only support my photograph. But what matters is my idea is expressed through such a creative means, as photography.Works Citedââ¬Å"Basic Rules of Photography.â⬠trem.ca. 20 September 2003. 9 January 2008 à à à à à à à .ââ¬Å"Best Photographs of 2005.â⬠Avolites Distributors Worldwide. 2005. 9 January 2008 à à à à à à à à à à à .ââ¬Å"Realism.â⬠HuntFor.com. 2007. 9 January 2008 .
